7. Editing Your Images

There are many people who used to have or still have their own darkrooms enjoying developing and enlarging their own films. However, many film users have never had a darkroom and therefore had to rely on film processors which can be expensive and relatively slow. This has all changed with digital photography.

One of the big advantages of digital photography is the speed with which you can upload your pictures to computer and edit them yourself. You do not need to acquire the skills or equipment necessary to process film or prints (or find space for darkroom).

Your computer can become a virtual digital darkroom that allows you to alter your images beyond all recognition if you wish. Many bizarre effects are easily possible allowing you to produce striking images with the excellent image editing software now available.

Editing Software

Digital cameras are capable of producing some amazingly good results but they are not infallible. There will be occasions when you will want to adjust the brightness or colour levels, crop the image or move elements of the picture around.

To do this (and much more), you'll need image editing software. These packages come all kinds of shapes and sizes for every type of computer, from simple software suitable for beginners to complex packages for design professionals.
